Going Green with Living Roofs and Living Walls

Going Green with Living Roofs and Living Walls

The concept of a living roof has existed for thousands of years. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, included multiple overhanging terraced gardens constructed on a building outside of modern-day Baghdad. Northern Europeans once chose traditional sod roofs as a means of insulating their houses.

Today, homeowners and commercial businesses in our area are embracing the concept of rooftop gardens and green walls for their homes and workplaces. Green canopies of succulents and drought tolerant perennials and grasses are sprouting above rooftops; while green walls are providing the restorative effects of vegetation inside homes and offices.

Transforming rooftops and walls into living entities can provide many benefits for the property owner and the community, including:

  • A unique aesthetic.
  • Improved interior air quality.
  • A longer roof lifespan.
  • Improved sound insulation inside building.
  • Prolonged life spans for HVAC systems.
  • Reduced heating and cooling costs.
  • Reduced and slowed storm water runoff.
  • The capture of gaseous and particulate pollutants.
  • Alleviation of urban heat island effects.
  • Increased biodiversity.
  • Reduced noise pollution (by 30-40 decibels).
  • Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) building certification credits.

Through LaurelRock’s partnership with Green Living Technologies International (GLTi), our custom-built green walls and roofs use only the highest quality and most enduring materials, including stainless steel and aluminum.
