Job Description

This position reports to our Operations Manager. The D/B Construction Manager is responsible for all production activities including scheduling, client communication, quality control, and warranty issues. Position is responsible for managing all field operations within the division. Coordinates the procurement and scheduled use of resources, including labor, equipment and materials to ensure on-time completion of work within budget, safety guidelines and quality standards.

  • Estimate, contract, and project manage bid/build work
  • Support Designer/Project Manager & Estimator/Contract Admin in estimating projects by meeting with subcontractors to obtain pricing & assist with material sourcing
  • Review construction drawings and estimate with Designer/PM; offer guidance and recommendations before going to final contract with client
  • Clearly understand design intent, client expectations and specific deliverables for each project
  • Create comprehensive Construction Schedule for each project including both self-performed and subcontracted work
  • Schedule and lead Pre-construction Meeting process
  • Drive construction deadlines and track progress against Construction Schedule to insure on-time completion
  • Actively manage costs to come in at or below contracted values for labor, material, equipment and subcontracted work on each project
  • Partner with Designer/PM to manage client communications throughout construction
  • Accurately track time and material costs for self-performed and subcontractor Change Orders
  • Obtain pricing and approve Change Orders and Payment Requests for subcontractors
  • Create and manage completion of punch list work prior to Designer/PM’s final walk-through with client
  • Review job cost reports with D/B team at Post Construction Project Review
  • Recruit, hire, and train D/B Crew Leaders, Crew Technicians, and Materials/Equipment Transport Tech
  • Manage production labor hours for daily, weekly, and monthly crew scheduling
  • Distribute weekly schedule, daily work orders, and PO’s to crew leaders
  • Approve daily timesheets prior to submitting to Admin and enter hours into scheduling sheet
  • Coordinate and insure efficiency of crews during morning departure and end-of-day preloading
  • Set-up crews and subcontractors on job sites daily; inspect work to insure quality control and adherence to drawings
  • Actively teach crews in all areas of landscape construction; cross-train all skills
  • Oversee Crew Leadership Training (CLT) Program for division and set Career Path goals
  • Set & communicate performance objectives to direct reports and hold them accountable/conduct annual perf. reviews
  • Recognize, coach and promote talented individuals to build a bench of future leaders and managers
  • Teach, integrate and insure adherence to safety policies in all field and yard operations and report immediately any incidents, injuries, or accidents
  • Implement lean management principles on worksites and at garage facility
  • Oversee care, cleaning and maintenance of D/B vehicles and equipment
  • Approve vendors and material purchases; schedule and coordinate delivery of materials to job site
  • Attend courses and seminars to increase job knowledge and skills

Job Requirements

Education, training, experience:

The ideal candidate will possess

  • 2 or 4-year college degree and 5+ years previous experience in construction management
  • Management experience with coaching temperament and proven leadership qualities
  • Proficient in Planting, Grading, Masonry, Irrigation, Fencing, Drainage, Pools, Water Features, and landscape construction techniques
  • Strong knowledge of zone 5 – 7 trees, shrubs, and perennials
  • Proficient with desktop software, specifically:  MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and QuickBooks
  • Proven ability to multitask, manage change and meet expectations
  • Proactive communicator with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail driven personality
  • Goal focused, and performance driven
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks and successfully direct other’s actions
  • Excellent problem solving techniques
  • Ability to speak both English and Spanish fluently is a plus
  • Must have a valid driver's license within the US
